Table cricket is an adapted, pan-disability form of cricket played on a table tennis table. It can be played both competitively and in a recreational, community or educational setting. Aimed at 8-18 year olds, it is inclusive – young people living with a wide range of behavioural needs, learning and complex physical disabilities take part. Key to the programme is the competitive element with a league structure for schools culminating in a National Finals Day at Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Many young people with severe physical or learning disabilities, particularly wheelchair users, have very few opportunities to participate in any form of sport. Table cricket provides an opportunity for these young people to compete, socialise and have fun, regardless of ability or disability.

“You are twice as likely to be physically inactive if you have a disability.”

The emphasis of playing is on enjoyment and developing social skills through interaction with friends in their team and others they meet through taking part in competitions. The game helps players with their cognitive and coordination skills, learn how to win and lose and improve team skills. Some players go on to develop strategy, planning and leadership skills, particularly through the role of team captain.

Young leaders, who are able to gain accreditations at various levels, play an increasingly key role in supporting the programme.

This year the competition was curtailed before we reached the regional stages but we still managed to engage more young people through table cricket than ever before. While we were unable to undertake formal impact research, we have strong feedback from participants and those around them of the benefits of playing table cricket.

Being part of a team helps players feel included and they tell us how proud and valued they feel as they represent their schools. They also tell us of the marked increase in their confidence, self-esteem and independence.
