Super 1s is a community cricket programme for disabled young people which puts access and inclusion at the heart of it. Disabled people who want to be active say that accessibility is one of their biggest barriers – too often there is little on offer for them. Providing free, accessible Super 1s sessions for disabled young people in a familiar and welcoming setting is making all the difference. Our hubs are truly inclusive for young people, regardless of ability or disability.

Super 1s gives young people aged 12-25 the opportunity to have fun playing cricket with friends every week and experience competitive sport with their peers.

But Super 1s is about much more than cricket – it’s about helping people develop the vital life skills that enable them to realise their potential, both on and off the pitch.

As our participants’ skills develop and friendships flourish, we see growths in confidence, social skills and self-esteem – and most critically an increasing awareness of what they can do, not what they can’t. These skills for life help young people think for themselves, deal with their own challenges and make healthy and independent life choices.

As more young people come through the programme many are now leading the way for others by progressing in to club and county cricket teams, employment, further education, coaching or playing other roles in their communities.

They are fantastic role models for those following them and help families and the wider community see what the future could hold.

Half of disabled people say they are lonely, and one in four feel lonely every day.
Sense 2017

Super 1s is helping young people to make new friends, feel included and part of something positive. The challenges for disabled young people and those around them are considerable. With workshops, events and residential festivals alongside in-session learning, Super 1s continues to impact these young people in positive and tangible ways, that go well beyond cricket in to their everyday lives and long-term futures.

This year saw our first Super 1s project workshops – focussed on healthy lifestyles and self-care. We also ran our first combined Wicketz and Super 1s event which gave both groups a greater understanding of the experiences each face in everyday life.
