Improve health, mental wellbeing and future prospects of participants

Our programmes start with cricket and sport but they are about so much more. Through activity, competition, life skills workshops and festivals we equip young people with the tools they need to help them flourish. Through talking about issues they care about – from their health, nutrition, environment and identity, to bullying, crime, gangs and so much more, we help give them the resilience and confidence to deal successfully with all that life throws at them.

We support good mental health by helping young people be part of something positive and make friends, giving them a sense of belonging and inclusion. We also look towards their futures by developing leadership and employability skills and opening cricket pathways.

Physical activity aided in fighting mental health problems such as depression and anxiety.

Sarah

Sarah joined the Oldham Super 1s hub in September 2018 aged 15. She had never played cricket regularly before and immediately loved it, finding an activity that gave her the opportunity to be active, make friends and above all thrive in an environment in which she could express herself and develop both her cricket and life skills.

Despite her inexperience Sarah excelled and after taking every opportunity offered, progressed to Lancashire’s Super 9s team. Her personal development and her ability to overcome many challenges have improved dramatically since.

Among the considerable challenges for Sarah, who lives with a learning disability and a hearing impairment, were the need to work as a team with people she hadn’t met before, adapting to totally new environments and also competing against opposition who were much more experienced than she was. Today, Sarah is someone who is not only comfortable with taking on new challenges but also happily taking on responsibilities within her team.

Her mother Georgina said, “Sarah’s confidence in herself has gone through the roof since starting Super 1s, she has become more positive and outgoing.”
